Leather is one of the oldest forms of upcycling
Recent archaeological excavations in Lower Saxony unearthed remarkably preserved remains of bear hides dating back approximately 320,000 years, once used as everyday tools. Similarly, in Spain, remnants of animal hides, including horse or bison, have been discovered through archaeological research, serving as clothing materials.
With its exceptional strength and versatile fiber structure, leather has found diverse applications throughout history. Nearly all civilizations have utilized this renewable resource. Suppliers of animal hides vary, ranging from bears, horses, deer, and cattle to smaller mammals. However, due to the abundance of cattle in the agro-industry and our dietary habits, cattle hides have predominated in recent decades. The consumption of beef and dairy continues to rise, leading to an increase in the volume of cattle hides available.
The story of leather reflects humanity's ingenuity in repurposing natural materials for various needs, from clothing to tools, demonstrating an early form of sustainable resource management. Despite technological advancements and the emergence of synthetic materials, leather remains prized for its durability, texture, and timeless appeal. Leather endures as a symbol of craftsmanship, tradition, and resilience, embodying the enduring connection between humanity and the natural world.
The Veneto region
of northern Italy, has a rich history in tanning dating back centuries. The town Arzignano has been a hub for leather production since Roman times. However, its modern leather industry began to flourish in the 19th century with the industrial revolution. Arzignano's strategic location near water sources and its proximity to major trade routes facilitated the growth of tanneries in the area. Today, Arzignano is renowned for its leather production, particularly in the tanning of high-quality hides for luxury goods and furniture.
Arzignano stands today as a global epicenter of modern advancements in leather production.
